One of the other good suggestions I have heard would be to expand the court eventually to 20 justices or so, with two appointments in each presidential term, and each case would be heard before a randomly selected panel of 7 or 9 justices. Expanding the court would not take a Constitutional amendment.
Honestly there are so many different ways to improve the court, the 18-year term thing is just the simplest. Another idea is to have 15 justices, with each party picking 5 and then the remaining 5 are selected by consensus among the first 10.
