So sorry, Harry. Cracker of an article though. Who knew we would graduate full of ideals to be reduced to just clinging on to a crumbling industry 15 years later.
To be clear, this advice is *very* particular to a single shrinking industry. And I am in no way anti-union — I helped organize my workplace a decade ago, and the Vox Union contract secured me a helpful amount of severance. But when companies are struggling financially, collective bargaining provides very little protection against layoffs. Digital media employees face different problems than workers at profitable companies who are being exploited.
I'm not even remotely close to this industry, but I think this kind of advice holds true in more scenarios than journalism (unfortunately).
